What to Expect in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class

Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Classes: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Stepping into your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class can feel intimidating, but knowing the structure of a typical session will help ease any nerves. At ARKA School of Jiu-Jitsu, our classes are designed to be welcoming, structured, and effective for students of all skill levels.

Warm-Up

Classes kick off with a 10-15 minute warm-up session. Expect movement drills like shrimping and breakfalls, and dynamic stretches to prepare your body. These activities improve flexibility, coordination, and overall fitness. The goal is to warm up your muscles to increase mobility and reduce the risk of injury.

Technique Instruction

While many think that grappling is the main show, technique instruction is actually the core of the class, as it is important to understand safe implementation to reduce the risk of injuries. Our instructors demonstrate specific moves by breaking them down and explaining their variations. Whether it’s mastering a guard pass or learning a submission hold, each technique is taught with clear instructions and plenty of time to understand it.

Partner Drills

The professor will strategically partner up the students and they’ll begin to practice the techniques. Drills focus on repetition and refinement, ensuring you build muscle memory and confidence in your movements. The professor will be monitoring and happy to answer questions.

Sparring (aka Grappling or Rolling)

For those ready to spar, this is where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu comes to life. Sparring involves applying techniques in live, controlled matches with a partner. It is up to the discretion of the professor whether new students are ready to roll, or if they should sit out and continue drilling technique. Often, the professor will roll with the beginners, or match them with a gentle higher belt, to ensure their safety and give feedback.

Water Breaks and Rest

Resting and taking water breaks is also a critical part of training to avoid exhaustion and enhance stamina. At ARKA School Of Jiu-Jitsu, we want our students to practice safe and sustainable jiu-jitsu, so we encourage everyone to take care of their health and listen to their bodies. When you need a break, tell your professor and take one.

Cool Down and Questions

After sparring, the class wraps up with stretching and a chance to ask questions. This is the perfect time to reflect on what you’ve learned and connect with your professor and training partners.

How to Prepare for Your First Jiu-Jitsu Class

Proper preparation can make all the difference in your first experience. Here are some tips to help you feel confident and ready.

What to Wear

For your first class, wear comfortable athletic clothing such as a t-shirt and shorts. At ARKA School of Jiu-Jitsu, we provide loaner Gis (the traditional uniform) to students in their trial period. Once you sign up, you’re required to purchase the school uniform. Please check out the options and all merchandise here. Please remove all your jewelry for your and your partner’s safety, and make sure your nails are short and clean. Please refrain from wearing make-up or anything that could dirty your partner’s gi. Hair must be tied up securely.

What to Bring

Pack a water bottle to stay hydrated, flip-flops or sandals to wear off the mats, and a towel if you tend to sweat a lot. Please note, eating on the mat is forbidden so please don’t pack snacks.

Hygiene Matters

Cleanliness is essential in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Shower before class, trim your nails, and wear fresh clothes. Good hygiene not only shows respect for your training partners but also helps maintain a clean environment on the mats.

Training Etiquette

Respecting the rules of the mat is important to maintain a healthy training environment. When entering the mat, you are expected to bow and greet your professor. You must inform your professor before leaving the mat as well. Please use shoes off the mat and stay barefoot on the mat, to help keep it clean. For a full list of mat rules, please visit our training etiquette page.

Overcoming Challenges in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Overcoming Challenges in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is exciting, and it’s normal to face some challenges. Here’s how to navigate them:

Physical Demands

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a full-body workout, so just like starting any new sport, expect to feel a bit sore after your first few classes. Over time, your endurance will improve, and your body will adapt to the demands of training.

Learning Curve

At first, the techniques might feel overwhelming. Remember, every expert was once a beginner. Focus on learning one move at a time and celebrate small victories along the way.

Uncomfortable Positions

You’ll find yourself in tight spaces or pinned by a partner during sparring. Stay calm, control your breathing, and focus on solving your situation through technique. Maintaining your calm in uncomfortable situations builds mental toughness and resilience.
