Is Brazilian jiu jitsu for adults good for beginners?

Yes. Our Brazilian jiu jitsu for adults classes are designed for all experience levels, including complete beginners. You do not need any prior martial arts experience to start.

Can I join adult jiu jitsu classes if I am out of shape?

Yes. Many students start Brazilian jiu jitsu for adults to improve fitness, lose weight, and build strength. All shapes and sizes are welcome, and there is no athletic prerequisite to join the sport. The beauty of jiu-jitsu is that it is highly adjustable to each person’s capabilities, and our coaches are experienced in adapting the moves to fit each student’s abilities.

How often should adults train Brazilian jiu jitsu?

Most adults do well training two to three times per week. This gives you enough time to build technique, improve conditioning, and stay consistent. If you are just getting started, 3 days a week, while alternating between training days and rest days, is ideal to allow your body to recover between sessions and reduce the risk of burnout without losing momentum and drive. That said, we understand busy schedules, and committing to at least one training a week is still a good start.

Does Brazilian jiu jitsu help with self-defense?

Yes. Brazilian jiu jitsu for adults teaches practical self-defense skills, including control, leverage, and escape-based techniques that can be useful in real situations. Jiu jitsu is a non-strike sport, and it is designed to help a smaller individual take down a larger opponent by using their weight, movement, and momentum against them. It is highly recommended for women’s self-defense and for kids who might be dealing with bullying or low self-esteem.

What should I wear to my first adult jiu jitsu class?

For your first class, wear comfortable workout clothes that are tight-fitting. No jeans, zippers, ties, or pockets, please, as those are a safety hazard. We will provide a rental gi for your free trial. Once you sign up, we will ask that you purchase the ARKA uniform so all students can be equal on the mat. Please see our complete list of merchandise here.

Can I train if I have a disability?

Yes, you can certainly train if you have a disability. Whether your disability is physical or mental, our coaches will work with you to understand your abilities and curate moves that highlight your strengths. ARKA provides jiu jitsu for special needs, and is also proud to support the autism society as well, and we have several students on the spectrum who have seen tremendous improvements with training. If you have a disability, we recommend jiu jitsu private lessons first to experience a tailored introduction to the sport and learn safety techniques and basic skills before incorporating it into the group class.
